"I can hardly imagine where I would be... if I had not come to Clovia!"

Amy Sents

I can still remember the excitement and anxiety I felt when making my first trek down the lower hall of Clovia as I moved in two and a half years ago.

Life since then has been a whirlwind of classes, new experiences, tough decisions, lessons learned, and of course, rich memories. I can hardly imagine where I would be right now- and who my friends would be- if I had not come to Clovia. In so many ways life here has helped me develop a cooperative spirit, a well-balanced way of life, and leadership skills.

One of Clovia’s premier ideals is to develop a cooperative spirit in its members. I am constantly amazed at how well women of different backgrounds, interests, and ambitions work together to accomplish goals and promote the house. I have learned that the women of Clovia are all my sisters and I can count on any of them to help me if needed.

And finally, through my experiences as an officer and volunteer in this house, Clovia has helped me develop my own leadership skills, all the while learning from others.

Again, I can hardly imagine what my life would be like without Clovia. Since moving to K-State Clovia has helped teach me how to work with other people, how to prioritize my time, and how to step up and stand out as a leader.

Clovia Scholarship House at Kansas State University

Seven 4-H students established Alpha of Clovia during the Great Depression in 1931, forming the first cooperative house at Kansas State University. Today, Clovia Scholarship House continues the intent of the founders, to provide sisterhood and develop leadership skills.

The Foundation serves as the landlord for Clovia, located one-block from the K-State campus. Through Clovia, The Foundation is able to provide an educational opportunity at a reduced cost for students, as well as personal growth, through cooperative living as an extended benefit of 4-H participation.

Sisterhood

Life at Clovia offers women the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of social events, including fall barn dances, spring formals and homecoming activities. They also take part in intramural sports and community service projects.

Academics

Clovia Scholarship House encourages academic achievement. A 3.0 GPA is required from incoming high school students. Transfer students having taken 12 hours at another university or school must have a 2.75 GPA. Full members must maintain a 2.75 GPA.

Cooperative Living

House duties are distributed among members in this cooperative living situation, with an average of five hours of duties per week. This cooperative effort allows Clovia to be an economical living situation. Members save as much as $2,000 per year in housing and food costs.

Donor Support

In 2006, Clovia celebrated 75 years with a major house renovation and updating project. The Foundation spearheaded the project, working with alumnae and businesses to give Clovia's building a modernizing face-lift.

Current Impact

  • Capacity of 60 members
  • Estimated savings of $2,000 per member, per semester
  • Full ownership of Clovia facility insured at more than $1 million
  • 90% of participants are 4-H'ers
  • Clovia alumnae develop relationships with the Foundation to serve as major donors
